Where are you this weekend? - 2024/25

first game of the season was meant to be a L9 friendly last Saturday - home team there, I’m there all ready - 30 minutes before kick off, away team rings and says they aren’t coming.

my new first game of the season - a L7 schools tournament - gonna have to dust off the cobwebs very fast for this one!
Where's that at? No schools back in my neck of the woods yet.

Nowhere Yet! After fracturing 5th metatarsal jogging on 11th December 23, finally got a pin put in it 5 weeks ago as it never healed. Plaster off next week then fingers crossed a slow return to fitness. Until then I'll be resuming my hopefully temporary assessing/coach/mentor/ whatever they are called career. Enjoy your rugby all.

5 toes? Not a born and bred Cumbrian then?

Had an AR gig a week or so ago:

Sedgely Park v Darlington Mowden Park

No issues other than the Comms were shit - although there is a big phone mast in the corner of the ground.

Fixtures are out for half of September. Not going anywhere I haven't been before.

Old Boys weekend at the University of Illinois. 2-3 former players are active referees, so I'll likely get the whistle for at least 20 minutes, and might jump in the last 10-15 minutes for a run out.

For the Midwest, I’ve encountered one college student who was refereeing on that panel, and he was the reason I pushed for the changes.

In having to prioritize on that end, the younger referees and those owed the most are getting paid first.

Re: colleges, two factors are at play

1 - students are just now starting the fall semester in most cases. Beyond that, two schools we cover are on trimesters, and they don’t start classes until September.

2 - if the club is going through the university to get the invoice paid (and ask for a W9 from me), that process can take time.

In my experience, they don’t take the mick, it’s a matter of giving them time to work through the bureaucracy, and that process can’t start until campuses open back up.
If there is someone planning games / organising teams etc then they can put in place a system to respect the match officials. They can do it if the want to. That they don't want (happy to keep on to the money for longer) to is far more likely.

When the rugby guys and the "bureaucrazy" talk to each other the rugby people say: "We will have a few games before your office is back in full swing. We need to put in place some provision for paying the officials. Now lets put a plan in place." It's not rocket science.

First ever L6 game on Friday (Durham City vs Sunderland) and then a L7 Ryton vs Gateshead on Saturday - both friendlies

Sunderland L6?😲 Christ. I did them against Seaton Carew at God knows what level about 10 years ago.

I played for Sunderland for a bit at Polytechnic. We had a game against West Hartlepool and got beat about 90-0. There were a few young Kiwis (older than me at 19/20) playing who ran over everyone. I was watching the RWC in 1987 - NZ playing Italy. I thought I know him AND him. It was the brothers Whetton erstwhile West Hartlepool players.

I've done Ryton and Gatehead at L7. There's a nice pub in Ryton at the bottom of the "town" near the green. It's some co-operative community venture with loads of different beers.🍺

Sunderland are Counties 1 - seem to be permanently second place, so only L7, it's down as a L6 because of Durham I think, top 3rd of Regional 2 North so almost a division between them - I'll take it either way - no doubt an assessor will appear on WTR soon!

Sorry to see this Ciaran. I hope it mends well.

If you don't mind the question, was this done jogging, or was it an accident you had whilst jogging?

By which I mean, was it something that happened rather innocously through 'wear and tear' or something else?

Believe it or not I was jogging down to meet the local running group I run with to keep fit!
Not wear and tear. just stepped on a slightly uneven pavement and I guess all weight was just at the wrong place at the wrong time and I felt it go

Ouch, thats not great. I wish you well and also remind myself that my bones are not as supple as they once were, and need to watch where i'm treading too!

This weekend back in N2N.

AR2

Leeds Tykes v Tynedale

Leeds close runners up to Rotherham last season and one of the favourites to go up. No-one came down from Nat 1 (they both went into N2W). Only new clubs are Harrogate (back after a year at L5) and level transferred Chester after a year in N2W.

Tynedale finished 6th last time.

There's 4 AGPs in N2N this year.

League game at a ground when my last playing, visit got me a knee to the throat and an elbow to the head for chipping the ball over their 9. They have a player that we are refusing to referee in their ranks.

Interesting, so if he's on the team-sheet do you just go home? does he play in areas outside of your society jurisdiction?
