Where are you this weekend? - 2024/25

Like a Cumbrian Michael Portillo.

North of a line from the Mersey/Humber, trains East to West and vice versa are a complete joke in this country. Hull to Liverpool is like some 3rd World experience clickety clacking through Yorkshire and Lancashire. You can get to London from Newcastle faster than you can get from Hull to Liverpool and it's more than 2x the distance.

Getting to Driffield involves going into Hull then reversing out again to head North. Meanwhile there's a Maglev in Shanghai doing 25 miles in 5 minutes.

I'm off to breath into a paper bag and calm down.
Where I'm at, there's ongoing improvement to get train speeds between then Chicago metro and St Louis metro up to 110mph. Might switch to it for trips up north once the local society's travel comp gets cut in half next fall.

I'm AR3 in a district cup final. Three youngsters as Ref and AR1 & 2. Three great prospects. Looking forward to helping them. A chance to watch the other two finals that are being played on the pitch that day as well.
Well that was fun!
The ref I worked for had a tidy game. Although he did have a mass brawl to contend with at the finish. 4 reds. He handled it very well indeed. So from a development angle if was a "good" experience for him. The two ARs were two youngsters who I have high hopes for. The AR4 was new to me. Again he proved to be a cracking lad.

I arrived early to watch the other two finals.

Interestingly it was the "lowest" final that was the best match. Passion, commitment and a lot of crap rugby but honest endeavor, with the match being decided on try count.

The middle game was the "top" encounter. It was a good game on a technical level but was the least exciting.

Ours was a bit "quiet" for 79 minute, ref did well (whistle was a "work on"), until it kicked of from nowhere in the "last play".

Not me but LLP jr is refereeing this weekend:-

Women’s Super League

Leigh Leopards v Warrington Wolves

Apart from another rung up the RL refereeing ladder it also puts him in, I would suggest, a fairly small club insofar as he’ll be able to say he’s refereed in both the Women’s Super League in RL and the English Women’s Premiership in RU in the same year, having done Saracens v Bristol Bears in January.

A proud dad moment to say the least.

Not til Monday, but it’s a holiday so I’m counting it

Boys D1 Semi-Final - Fenwick @ La Salette.

First HS game of the year, and it's gonna be a cracker. Given the number of incidents that have arisen in prior years, surprised to have no ARs. Game will likely be live-streamed, so hopefully the visitors will be on their best behavior (I have no such qualms about the hosts - it's a Jesuit boarding school who are by far the most pleasant team to work with in the division).

Me and my stupid self-jinxing mouth

Visitors cried off

Last XVs of the season, and ironically my first U19/HS run-out.

AR1 for the Girls title game (CRC Valkyries vs Morton)
Center for Boys Club D2 title game
AR2 for Boys Club D1 title game

And because the organizer is always on top of things, they are scheduled back to back to back with maybe 20 minutes between games.

Lakefront 7s in Milwaukee. Heard about it many times, finally making the trek. 76 teams across 8 divisions, so a lot of rugby.

Will be a long day, leaving around 4am and getting back around 10-11pm. Hotel isn't an option due to familial obligations.

It's the Grand Final tomorrow night. Probably my last game in Australia.
4 yellows.

"You went deliberately in at the side, at his knees, killing the ball. Any one of those is yellow"
"Repeated infringements in the 22m, 2 minutes after the warning"
"The only reason that these aren't red is because neither of you can actually punch for shit"

As well as the by-now customary medal for the To4, I now possess a trophy that could be classified as an offensive weapon

This Friday evening off to watch Jr doing:-

  • Leeds Rhinos v Leigh Leopards - Betfred Women's Super League @ Headingley

Kicks off at 17h30 ish so there should be a few hundred at the start and a few thousand in by the time his game finishes - ahead of the men's televised game.

He is the reserve referee for the men's game which follows - same teams. His change to RL is going ok so far.

He'll probably be back in RU for Oct/Nov/Dec.

Congrats to both of you

I actually qualified to Ref RL 20 years ago when my son was playing mini RL and you had to pass a course to ref.
After qualifying on a course run by Origin ref Ashley Klien of all people, my son promptly packed in and stayed with soccer! Wish I'd have stuck at it in hindsight. They get paid for it even at amatuer level (well it would at least have been my beer money) and looking at the standard of officials who do my home club Barrow, I might have made it! ;)
I look forward to watching LLP Junior at Craven Park.
I guess we'll at least see him bringing the water bottle on for the ref at stoppage time in the men's game :ROFLMAO:

You never know about Barrow.

He's done Barrow Island

If he can get a League 1 gig before the end of July he'll have managed to referee at L3 in RU and the 3rd Tier of Rugby League within a year.

Whilst the Laws are what they are it is his people management skills, honed in RU, that have helped him immensely. He has so far managed to avoid using a head cam (unlike lots of referees are "required" to). He says it constrains him on how he manages players and whilst it's good for gathering evidence its presence mandates an expected response.

Looks like a warm day tomorrow so he'll be busy running on and off to keep Liam Moore hydrated.

He's got Siddal v West Hull on Saturday in NCL Premier so his legs will know about it at 16h00 on Saturday.
