Where are you this weekend? - 2024/25

After three weekends off (two planned, one weather-induced), doing a friendly 7s event at SIU-Carbondale for women's teams that didn't qualify for CRCs.
Due to the "smart" college kids being unable to plan ahead, I'm also covering the intramural final at my alma mater Friday night.

This weekend

N2N AR2

Chester v Preston Grasshoppers

The most exciting finish to a season I can ever recall. Before the games on the 12th March the bottom of the table looked like this:-

After those games it now looks like this:-

With the following fixtures (keep up) due this weekend.

Chester (7th) v Preston Grasshoppers
Otley (10th) v Hull
Harrogate v Billingham

Billingham and Hull are in a period of relatively good form whereas PG haven't won since 8th February - Harrogate are still in the mix thanks to their ability to pick up bonus points. If points are level, wins are the next criterion which could be Harrogate's undoing.

Because of the structure of N2 (W, E & N) and various bits and bobs happening further up only the bottom of N2N will be relegated which will be one of the four shown. Exciting stuff - here's hoping we don't FIU.

Llanishen Athletic Vs Lymington Mariners a tour game tomorrow. Should be a bit of fun.

Well what a cracking bunch of lads the Lymington boys were. The poor "Dick of the Day" had to drink a pint of beer though a gutted fish, the beer bein poured though the gutting cut and coming out through its mouth! Pretty disgusting and too much for one of the tourists who lost his post match food pretty quickly.

AR/TZ work at CRAA championship weekend in Indianapolis.

High-level Mens 15s and Womens 7s - a selection of players are already capped or pushing for selection. Should be a good experience.

That's me finished.

Off to Magic Weekend this weekend and will drop in to some of Jr's RL games over the Summer.

Enjoy the break if it applies.

Here's hoping Faz is all set for sticking it right up the Australians. Byeeeee!

I think that's it done for me. Nice to get back to it this season after a full year out injured.
Might be having a run out with my local Masters RL squad over the summer other than that must make an effort to keep fit for the pre-season stuff in August!

Nothing in the middle for me, last Colts game as a coach for me today after 13 years so Sunday’s are going to be different!

Charity game next weekend and hopefully some Sevens coming up too

Yeah...this ended up morphing into
- AR/TZ for both D1AA mens semis and the final
- AR for the D2 mens final
- TZ for the D1A final
- #4 for a good chunk of the womens 7s pool play, the cup quarters and cup semis

This weekend, doing a D3 mens festival @ Peoria. Sunday Morning (St Louis), NW Indiana and my local club are converging for a series of 40-minute games.

This Friday is South Yorkshire Referees AGM and meal. Depending how I feel, on Saturday I'll be off to watch Jr doing:-

  • West Hull v Siddal (Halifax) in the National Conference League - Premier Division. 1st v 3rd.

These two teams represent as good as Amateur Rugby League gets in England (UK) before it becomes (semi) professional. Even then these two teams are probably better than the lower half of League 1. It explains how the Challenge Cup is able to throw up "Giant Killing" fixtures in the early rounds. This is about Jr's 20th game of RL since he switched last July. We'll see what this season brings.

Spoke too soon. Not quite finished.

This weekend AR1 (yes 1)

Gill Burns Div 1 Pool 1
  • Yorkshire Women v Northumberland Ladies @ Driffield RUFC
Looking forward to it. Referee is a lass from Lancashire with two NLMOT ARs waving flags. Should be good.

Only refereed at Driffield once in 20 years of refereeing. In my playing days they used to have a wooden clubhouse with huge open fire. Replaced by a soulless, modern, light edifice about the turn of the Millennium. Weather looks warm and no doubt ground will be rock hard so getting the pimply Asics Hockey shoes out of the cupboard for this one.

Jr's RL game on Saturday left his feet a mess. 75% of the players were walking like they'd s**t themselves post match, despite the Crocs and Sliders!!!

I'm AR3 in a district cup final. Three youngsters as Ref and AR1 & 2. Three great prospects. Looking forward to helping them. A chance to watch the other two finals that are being played on the pitch that day as well.

Back in Peoria, they’re hosting St Louis Hornets

Was offered a chance to AR/#4 at Men’s college 7s nats, but mentally cannot take a 5-6hr one-way drive right now.

I actually went on exchange to Driffield about 15 years ago when the powers that be thought I might progress. Quite as journey from Cumbria, (4 hour drive) so I decided to go on the train and somehow made it! looking now I'd have to set off at 8 and get home at midnight. Thank god I never progressed and got more exchanges:ROFLMAO:

Like a Cumbrian Michael Portillo.

North of a line from the Mersey/Humber, trains East to West and vice versa are a complete joke in this country. Hull to Liverpool is like some 3rd World experience clickety clacking through Yorkshire and Lancashire. You can get to London from Newcastle faster than you can get from Hull to Liverpool and it's more than 2x the distance.

Getting to Driffield involves going into Hull then reversing out again to head North. Meanwhile there's a Maglev in Shanghai doing 25 miles in 5 minutes.

I'm off to breath into a paper bag and calm down.
