Penalty try?

Might be a trivial one. Worst case i'll learn something useful.

Aus vs Arg 3rd place game at NYC's svns series.

Context: An Arg player is passed the ball near the opposition's in try line. He is running at full speed and there is an Aus player chasing him. When the Arg player touches (not grabs) the ball he is tackled from behind, but it is a high tackle. He cannot gain control of the ball and drops it. Knock on. The ref acknowledges the high tackle, says that it is a yellow card for the Aus player BUT he also says it is not a penalty try because, even thou no other Aus player could have stopped the Arg player (had he catched the ball), the Aus player could have tackled him properly.

TLDR: is the argument "he committed a penalty that stopped a clear try opportunity but there is a universe where he could have stopped it legally" a valid reason NOT to award a penalty try? That sounds strange, bizzarre when i read it out loud.

Couldn't find a video i could link here, hope this image clarifies the scenario a bit. Arg player running, about to get the ball while Aus10 is also about to (high) tackle him from the side/behind.

Thanks in advance.

Seems crazy to me....unless I'm misunderstanding the scenario!

Is the referee doubting that the attacking player would have gained possession of the ball? If they were 'juggling' then they were already in possession!

Law says:
"Penalty try
Awarded when, in the opinion of the referee, a try probably would have been scored (or scored in a more advantageous position) if not for an act of foul play by an opponent."

So that raises this question: if foul play had not been committed, would a try have probably been scored? In this case, I'd think probably not

all that OP ref's quote says to me is the ref
1) hasnt heard of "beam me up scotty" concept
or
2) "beam me up scotty" has been rescinded (probably via some secret email)
OR
3) both!

Ok, found a video (https://rugbypass.tv/video/933749?playlistId=35057). Around 3:35 on the clock (match, NOT the video timer).

Interesting. I guess the key here is how do you read the "if foul play had not been committed" part. I recall a few instances where the implicit interpretation of that was along the lines of "had the foul play not been commited by player X, was there another player from that team in a position to stop the try?". Here the interpretation is quite different: "Could player X have done anything differently to stop the try?"
I guess my understanding was wrong.

I would consider penalty try a reasonable outcome. the ref says "he can still make a legal tackle if he wants" except he can't.

He made the high tackle, that was the defender's gamble.

If he had tackled lower he might have brought him down before the line but he went high and stopped him scoring you cannot unpick that.

...the ref says "he can still make a legal tackle if he wants"
For me that is total nonsense. Would we ever get a PT if we applied that logic.

Scrum going down as it is being pushed over - They could and countered to push legally and driven them back.

Deliberate Knock on - he could have gone with two hands.

And so on. In many, many PT incidents there was an alternative to the foul play that may well have stopped the score.

"Beam me up Scotty" (Kirk never actually said those words!) is the only approach that makes sense.

Another example here. Repeated infringements on goal line results in a yellow card, but normally see a penalty try for this as it's foul play stopping a probable try.
