Not the reason Durham Refsoc wanted to get featured on the Beeb

Probably not Flish, but to be fair it is really important to get this message out to as wider audience as possible, as its certainly not just happening in Durham.

Oh absolutely, that's why we've done it, and hopefully those few clubs that are getting vetoed by some will realise it is them.

Why is the lead photo of a referee showing a red card? Paints a confrontational, us v them image

Seems strange to me that they used the word "criticism " as a reason referees were stepping away.
Nothing wrong with criticism in itself.

That'll be a stock photo used by the BBC. They won't be interested in the optics. It's a referee story therefore we'll use a red card.

It's probably a football referee's hand and that looks like a pea-less whistle - Acme Tornado type.

We at South Yorkshire Referees have had to "deal" with an increasing number of MOA (Match Official Abuse) forms submitted over the last year.

The sanctions imposed by the CB (Yorkshire RFU in our case) are in line with current guidance - aggravating factors etc. - brought in about a year ago but it seems not to be decreasing.

There seems to be a few serial offenders however we cannot unilaterally withdraw our services (although Referees declining appointments is not something we can control). We had one referee deciding to quit but he has returned having slept on it.

There are a couple of clubs up here whose supporters can cross the banter/abuse line and whilst they can stick as many "Respect the Match Official" posters up as they like there's a disinclination by some to address it.

My real concern are the sanctions imposed (or not as the case may be) by "Junior Discipline" on young players and/or their coaches. Not only does it appear inconsistent with the same transgressions at Senior Rugby but it is appearing at younger and younger age groups - not necessarily players but blokes and women who think they're coaching a team in RWC Final.

Dissent/Abuse is another issue to deal with not least as the criteria for each overlap but are different - if that makes sense.

There's always a trade off with thick/skin and/or experience and leaving it for next weeks' referee.

I don't think it's going away any time soon.

You can't as a society unilaterally withdraw your services but every individual in that society, who are all volunteers, could make themselves unavailable if appointed to certain clubs..
I've been the victim of MOA abuse and withdrew from appointments to certain clubs for a while.
Things did improve but we cannot be complacent.

I don’t do as many youth games as I did (my son plays in the Colts leagues to typically with him and don’t ref his games) but I have to agree that those touch lines can be the worst.

That said, there are parallels between some of the worst age grade coaches and their club touchline standards, not always, but I do believe standards start at the top

We voted as a society to do so with certain clubs / individuals. Shows a soid united position.

Why can't English societies do so?

They could, couldn't they ? There is no Law about it, it's not like we are police, prohibited from striking

I am sure the RFU wouldn't like it, but what could they do ? I guess they could invite scab refs from other societies to cover games, and lifetime bam for the strikers ? But I don't think that's likely in practice

"crossref, how about a L8 game in Durham this week? No, it's not an exchange, exactly and no, there won't be anyone watching you.. Oh, but there might be a picket line"

When we stood down we asked the Eastern Ontario society to refuse to referee any of our games. They were happy to agree.

I don't know. I am asking based on the following post which implies they can't

Over here theres a sliding scale of fines for the clubs found guilty of MOA as well as suspensions for individuals.

€500 in first instance and rising up from there, they also reduce their allocation of International tickets for the 6 nations.

Interesting Flish but all these sanctions are for individuals. Is there a page for clubs?
Don’t think so, although not difficult to scroll back through the year and come up with the prime culprits, that said, that’s only what’s officially reported - we all know that a lot gets ignored or not dealt with

Because RFU Regulation 12.1.1f states:

"A Referees’ Society or the RFU cannot refuse to appoint Match Officials to any particular Club for disciplinary reasons unless the matter has completed the appropriate disciplinary process (to which the complainant Society or the RFU department as the case may be shall be invited and be able to make representations or have them made on their behalf) and during the course of that disciplinary process consent has been given to that course of action."
