[In-goal] No touch down after missed PK

Watching a game on Saturday afternoon, an interesting thing happened:

Blue kick at goal and miss. White fullback catches the ball in in goal and, without minoring it, throws it forwards for the drop out.

Nobody notices, drop out is taken and nothing more is said. Until after the game I had a chat with the referee and asked if he'd noticed and done it deliberately. He hadn't.

So my question: was this well handled? And in that situation (assuming you noticed and nobody else did) would it be worth going back for the forward pass?

I know what the laws are - this isn't intended to be a law discussion.

If he didn't see it he didn't see it. And he can only rule on what he saw.

Will Greenwood did this IIRC in one of the 2003 RWC games (and it got spotted).

2ndary question : shold this ever be viewed as a deliberate throw forward and PKd?

Yes I remember seeing this done on TV and penalised with a scrum

I would give a scrum (also I would be surprised if the oppo didn't notice !)

For me no.
 
Also saw an identical situation on Saturday.
I think I was the only person in the crowd (ok 40 people and five dogs) that noticed.
My plaintive 'he didn't touch it down sir!' had no effect. 22m drop out!
 
Is there a chance the player was a league convert? If you catch the ball in the in-goal it's automatically back to the 20m in league.

This is always a scrum to be honest. Technically the guy catching is offside, but it's just a brain fart/lack of knowledge of laws by the players. PK would be very harsh and show a lack of empathy. He's fair game to be tackled though if any defenders are awake.

That's why you need to blow quick and give the scrum.
A situation where a player holding the ball thinks the ball is dead, but meanwhile an opponent thinks it's live ... Is very dangerous. You can't just shrug and watch what inevitably happens next.
