Late charge on the kicker - ball goes straight out

Flish

Referees in England
New scenario for me, late and no arms by blue on white kicker just outside white 22, immediate whistle and yellow card.

We have options on the location of the pen, but the ball went straight out (so in open play no gain in ground) just outside the oppo 22.

No peaking, but where is the other pen location?

I got it right, at least solid it mostly, which turned out to be right, blue captain was not sold but apologised after!

15m line in line with where the ball goes into touch.
We have a winner, feels wrong (hence the chat in the bar because a normal kick would have been brought back) so for once not where the game would restart-ish but makes sense if
You understand what we’re penalising

The answer is don't late charge the kicker.

I think I said something along the lines of “the problems isn’t where the kick is, it’s what your 12 did down there”

It's actually an option.
Penalty where it was kicked, or penalty on the 15m line where it went out.

Just thinking about this. What if the foul play was VERY late. ie ball is out on full, ref has blown whistle and AR and all lineout players are making their way to where the lineout will be (just outside 22) when the kicker gets whacked by an opponent. Where would the penalty be?

If the answer is "on LoT, 15m in" then the lesson to the offender is to make sure your late hit is after ball has crossed the touchline.

For me if it's that late and the ball is already dead, it's no longer foul play on the kicker, it's just foul play (man without the ball).
Penalty where play would restart, so on the 15m line again and possible a card.

So in my original scenario it was straight out from outside the 22 (just) so restart is 15m in from the kick - a lot of metres difference for a fraction of a second

Thanks, missed that it was outside. So in that scenario the option becomes more important, depending on where the kick was from. Maybe a better angle for the PK from midfield than the 15m line.
