Defending Scrum Half Raising leg to block pass.

Ciaran Trainor

Referees in England
Had this a couple of times Saturday Black scrum, Green SH follows around and as Black SH attempts to pass to his 10, Green sticks out a leg to block/knock down the pass.
Now it sort of looks wrong but I don't think any offence occurred. There was certainly nothing dangerous.
Black backrow soon sorted the ball position out and it never really created further problems.
Any thoughts? have you had the same?

Seen it a lot, nothing to penalise as long as he starts from an onside position.

It's illegal to kick the ball out of someone's hands, so if he is close to that you should PK . Otherwise OK

OK in itself. Double check for offside though, making sure both feet are behind the ball before it leaves the scrum...

[LAWS=]Law 19.30
Once play in the scrum begins, the scrum-half of the team not in possession:
Takes up a position with both feet behind the ball and close to the scrum but not in the space between the flanker and the number eight or
[/LAWS]

If oppo ball carrier has all his weight on one foot ready to do this ... Might be worth the ball carrying SH having a quick run !

You cannot kick the ball out of a player's hands, but once they have released the ball, you can take a fly hack, providing you are onside and it is not dangerous.

And, of course, it cannot be a knock on - so it is safer than trying to intercept with your hands.

They can also run into the path of the ball and let it ricochet off the chest - provided it does not come off the arm.
But as crossref says, if the other 9 reads what you are trying to do, they can do something different.

Agreed, it would have to be clearly off the chest or head, as it would be a big call by the ref not to do you for a potentially deliberate knock on.
