I had this discussion Saturday with a fellow ref who said he had looked it up and the new not straight law for line outs was in and I was wrong!Ha, have the opposite in the North, everyone seems to have heard and assume that the law is in play when it isn’t for us yet![]()
good luck with that one.I look forward to clear directives as to what is competing for the ball.
Re point 1. I can’t believe it is compulsory to lift now! From the 2025 GMG
- A jumper needs to be lifted (by 1 or 2 lifters) to compete for the ball
If the ball is thrown not straight to the back and there is a lift at the front, it is not straight as there is a contest from the opposition
The throw must still be attempted to be thrown straight to a player in the lineout -deliberately throwing the ball not straight is not allowed and liable for sanction.
Quick/short throws to the front player and throws beyond 15m still need to be straight, regardless of contest
I read it as 'you can't just jump up unlifted against a lifted player and claim you're competing' - that you need to lift against a lifting team together the not-straight callsRe point 1. I can’t believe it is compulsory to lift now!
Obviously that is what it is saying. But in turn it means that it is making lifting compulsory if you want to compete.I read it as 'you can't just jump up unlifted against a lifted player and claim you're competing' - that you need to lift against a lifting team together the not-straight calls
I suppose the thing is we see/read/talk about a lot of things on this forum (which is what it makes this such a special place) that we never ever see.Having been refereeing this for a year and a bit now, these are 'problems' that just haven't come up.
The teams are looking for credible equitable decision making. "But we put one up at the back and he went to the front" has never, ever happened. Will it? Maybe. ANd then I'll be credible and equitable.
