Aussie 2025 GMG Changes || What's in your early season Pre-Game briefing

RemainingInTheGame

Referees in Australia
Fair bit to cover early season for the updated GMGs!

- Croc Roll
- Lineout (No contest = straight and also sanction change to FK)
- Halfback (no playing the player clearing the ball) [although I think we had this in NSW last season]
- Open play kicks (retreat and onside changes)
- Timing for conversions to 60s

Do you plan to cover all of these in your early season pre-briefing, or assume that everyone has been briefed?

(I'm starting with U13 and U14 trials, so plan to run through them all - just as much for the coaches as for the players!).

Link to GMGs:

Depending on the level you're reffing, but I'd check with the coach that the team understands, rather than keeping 20 people standing around to listen to me going through a list they probably already know.

I do that .. I say "do you want me to brief them are are you happy they all know". Often leads to a good conversation and a better PMB

They used to send law trials to Stellenbosch where could be monitored & analysed for efficacy. Now they send them to Aussie community level rugby. Good grief

The RFU at least had a "laws laboratory" at Cambridge University IIRC, back in the day . I suspect that has long gone.

I'm finding sides are assuming the new laws are in and I have to say not until the new season (september) for us. They are aware of the changes.
I am finding they are most interested in the wonly lineout throw .. because some refs have been applying that for quite a few seasons already.
Perhaps it would have been better to have adopted that one immediately

We had our GMG Briefing from RA on Sunday. First few games, make sure everyone knows.

"So, we're all about creating space, yes?"
"Yes Simon"
"So what good's a FK then?"
"...."
"If I take a lineout or a scrum, I get 8 defenders in the 15. This way, when my only options are kick it or tap it, I get 15 defenders spread over the field and minimal space in which to operate"
"But a quick tap late in the game...."
"You think I'm getting a quick tap after the hooker threw it to his own side?"

Flaming idiots.

Down in the weeds when a team get an unwanted FK, outside own 22 they have little choice but tap it and set up a ruck, or two rucks.. which is more time consuming than a scrum, and involves fewer forwards and more defenders spread over the field, and back foot offside lines rather than 5m and basically less space, less rugby

absolutely. Ive been saying it for years. The "issue" is that in the mid field area FKs are totally useless.

well, I think you fellers call it a "garry owen", but an up and under was an option once upon a time

Line out laws aren’t passing “the pub test”. I was AR in a grade match yesterday. The crowd were going nuts over crooked throws not being called.
