Where the 2018 Law Book is actually different from 2017

I have just collected my copy of the new law book. It is bigger! A5 instead of A6 (148 * 210 mm instead of 105 * 148 mm) Although it is 138 pp instead of 206, that is still an increase in print area, and it won't fit in my pocket. Put me down as not impressed.

[Law] Knock On advantage.. and kick

If the bad kick is not due to defensive pressure, I would say that is advantage over - the player might have done just the same after a scrum. The actual outcome was entirely his own fault.

[Law] Knock On advantage.. and kick

I have never thought that view made much sense. The standard question about a kick under advantage is "was the kick a free choice or under pressure?" I see no reason why the same logic should not apply to an attempted drop goal.

    [Law] Law 13.3 b

I certainly do not see the player crawling. He is on the ground and lunges for the ball. I can't be sure if his knees were off the ground from that clip, but if they were, he had regained his feet and was thus a player falling on the ball, who is entitled to pass it.

[Ruck] Preventing tackled player from releasing the ball/tackled player not releasing

This is a variation on the old cry of "You've got to let him up!" Yes, it is legal for the tackled player to place the ball. Similarly it is legal for a player to score a try. However there are legal ways of stopping him, and the same applies to tackled player trying to place the ball. If the...

    Weight/size grading - Australia attempt

Many years ago when I was living in Washington DC, the Peewee Beltway League for football had weight divisions. A scandal blew up because it turned out at least one coach was feeding the kids diuretics to keep their weight down.

    [Maul] Maul - Legal collapse

I think the new law book makes the situation clear: 7. Players joining a maul must: a. Do so from an onside position. b. Bind on to the hindmost player in the maul. Both a and b are needed, so a player cannot join in the side even in in-goal.
